LaserAce® Hypsometer
Product number: 5403
What if you had a tool that could measure height, range, diameter and calculate log volume plus store all this data in one single unit?

Measurement Devices Ltd (MDL) is a Scottish based designer and manufacturer of LaserAce® Hypsometer. A tool that was designed for you!
LaserAce® Hypsometer incorporates several functions in order for you to do your job more efficiently without carrying several other tools around with you!
What are your problems?
- Measuring height is an issue when you can't see the base of the trunk
- Measuring a tree's condition but its in a garden that I don't have access too
- Knowing the diameter of a tree near the top of the trunk
- Checking the height of the tree to order the right size platform
- Calculating volumes easily "its so time consuming!"
- Checking the distance between trees
- Too many gadgets on the market that don't do what they say on the tin!
What do you want to do?
- Reduce my time out in the field by making simple but time consuming measurements more easily
- Find a product that’s easy to use with no real training (I just don’t have time)
- Measure height when scrub is an issue or I can’t see the base of the trunk.
- Measure from a distance without intruding into peoples gardens
- Measure the tree accurately without climbing it or guess-estimating it
- Storing my data within the unit for later analysis
- Measure height, range, lean, calculate volume and store the data without using several pieces of kit to do so.

What can LaserAce® Hypsometer do?
Measure ranges
The LaserAce® Hypsometer will measure ranges up to 150m/ 500’ without a reflective target. LaserAce® Hypsometer uses ‘pulsed-time-of-flight’ technology therefore it will measure to all types of objects without reflective targets. Making measuring easy!
"LaserAce® Hypsometer - affording users considerable cost savings on field operations"
Example:
- Check distances between you and a tree
- Check the distance of a area to be felled
On ‘firing’ the laser the unit will show slope distance, vertical angle, horizontal distance to the tree and height.
Measure Diameters
The LaserAce® Hypsometer incorporates specially designed (x 5 magnification) numbered stadia hairs.

When you sight through the scope you will see these numbered stadia hairs. You then bracket either side of the trunk (one line on each side) – you might have to stand forwards or backwards in order to get a pair to fit.
On firing the laser, you can determine the correct diameter of the tree (at any point). Thus identifying the diameter.
The unit shows diameter, vertical distance and horizontal distance to the tree.
Measure height, lean and volume
The LaserAce® Hypsometer incorporates three different methods for measuring heights depending on your requirements.
First you can select the plot number and then tree number.
Single Point
Here you point and shoot at the top of the tree. The screen at the side of the unit will then display the results showing height, diameter (at that height) and volume. This method is used if the tree is positioned on a flat plain ie. Park within a built up area
2-Point height
This mode is used for remote calculation of height and distance between two successive points. You just point and shoot at the base of the tree then at the top of the tree. The unit again shows the height, diameter and volume. This mode will also calculate the tree’s lean as it knows the angle difference between the points.
3-Point height
Uses one laser measurement to the middle of the tree then two-angle measurements (one at the base and then one at the top). This method is ideal if scrub is an issue at the base of a tree.

For example, because the laser is measuring to the middle of the trunk, it has a range measurement (to the tree) and angle. When you then shoot the base of the tree (even if you can’t see the base due to scrub but you know where the base roughly is) the unit knows the angle from the first measurement to the 2nd measurement thus calculating the difference.
This is also the case for the top of the tree. If the canopy is thin, laser want pick up a measurement. However since the unit is using 3-point height and ‘angle’ measurements it will calculate the height of the tree.
Other modes/ options
Tapering. We have incorporated into the height modes a ‘tapering’ factor in percentage (%) (percentage for world-wide use). Therefore when you wish to know the volume of specific tree you can incorporate a tapering factor to be included for a more accurate result.
Critical range gating for area plots, add in a maximum distance and the LaserAce® Hypsometer want measure outside that specified target range.

Critical height/ diameter. This mode allows you to enter the taper factor of a tree and 'find' the height at which a specified diameter is reached or the point up a tree at which a specified height or length is reached.
LaserAce® Hypsometer is configured in metres or feet depending on your requirement. We have also incorporated ‘First Hit’, ’Last Hit’ or ’Brush Filter’ modes depending on your requirements.
First Hit. When Fist Hit is selected the laser will pick up the first object it hits ie. Branches closest to you (the first object in its path).
Last Hit. When Last Hit is selected the laser will pick up the last object it hits ie. The branch furthest away (the last object in its path).
Brush filter mode (for use with a prism). If you require a range to a specific tree, you can activate the ‘brush filter mode’. This mode enables the laser to only pick up reflective prisms. Therefore you can measure to a specific tree without picking up other measurements.
Auto Power. Auto Power can also be selected to be on or off.
The unit has been designed for simple, effortless use – point-and-shoot technology. No need for bulky accessories, targets or responders. Simple ‘all-in-one’ heighting, diameter, lean and log volume instrument, affording users considerable cost savings on field operations.
