Measurement Devices Ltd (MDL) are a world leader in innovative laser measurement technology and positioning and navigation systems.
MDL is a privately owned Scottish based designer and manufacturer of eye-safe laser based measurement systems. The company was established in 1983 and is ISO 9001/ 2000 certified. MDL’s products range from simple laser modules to complex 3D laser surveying and imaging systems.
A number of MDL’s products have become ‘industry standard’ including Fanbeam® laser radar for dynamic positioning control of ships and Quarryman® laser rock profiling systems used in hard rock mining operations and C-ALS, Cavity Scanner used for remote void measuring.
The company also undertakes a continuous program of research and development to ensure MDL and its customers stay ahead of the competition. In response to industry demands for innovative technology, whilst improving industry standards, MDL, continually strive to provide technological solutions pushing the boundaries of laser measurement technology forward.
MDL operates from six bases: Aberdeen, Scotland & York, England, Houston, Texas & Elko Nevada, USA. Ontario, Canada & Melbourne, Australia
80% of MDL’s sales are outside the UK.
MDL’s Strategic Business Units
MDL’s products are managed within four SBU’s (strategic business units). These are:
Laser Modules – Eye-safe (pulsed time of flight) reflectorless laser modules to end users, OEM’s and system developers. These products are robust industrial laser modules and scanners for the Aviation, Defence, Traffic (ITS), Security, Industrial Process Control, Collision Avoidance and Ballistics. MDL product brands include LaserAce® IM, industrial laser module and LaserAce® SLM, scanning laser module.
Hand-held Laser Systems – Eye-safe (pulsed time of flight) reflectorless ‘hand-held’ laser measurement ‘tools’ for easy measurement of range, height, area, volume, diameter/ width, lean, slope and gradients. Markets include Forestry, Mining, Mapping, Agriculture, Utilities Industries and Asset Measurement. MDL product brands include LaserAce® Pocket Series and LaserAce® 300.
Laser Systems – Eye-safe (pulsed time of flight) reflectorless 2D and 3D laser surveying and scanning systems. Rugged laser scanners used in remote void measurement, rock profiling, landslide survey and borehole deviation measurement. Markets include Quarrying, Mining, Mapping, Military, Construction and Engineering. MDL product brands include: Quarryman®, LaserAce® Scanner, C-ALS (Cavity Auto Scanning Laser System), Boretrak® and Void Scanner.
Dynamic Systems – Mobile (on the move) reflectorless 2D and 3D scanning systems used in the oil related marine positioning and collision avoidance markets. New developments have recently extended MDL’s capabilities to dynamic land/ terrain scanning. MDL brands include: Fanbeam®.
